Implicit Bias and the Legal Profession

This course will address the impact of implicit bias in the legal profession and the mitigation of implicit bias. This program will benefit all actors in the legal profession in any practice environment, including attorneys, judges, legal assistants, paralegals, and law students. 

In this course, we will discuss (1) how the unconscious mind works in the development of implicit biases; (2) how our implicit biases manifest in and impact our daily lives; and (3) how to mitigate the influence of implicit bias in the legal profession.

1. Analyze the science of implicit bias and how the unconscious mind works 
2. Breakdown the consequences of implicit bias and how our implicit biases influence our  decisions and interactions with others in the legal profession 
3. Identify strategies to mitigate the influence of implicit bias in the legal profession, including  becoming aware of our implicit biases, recognizing conditions that foster the expression of  implicit biases
