Overview

When a student is charged with a violation of their college or graduate school's code of conduct, in many cases students may face suspension, expulsion, or a permanent mark on their transcript. When the consequences are this serious it is advisable to have an attorney but unlike in most legal issues, an attorney cannot "represent" the student and try and negotiate a resolution with the school. To represent a client for a violation of their college or graduate school code of conduct, you must have an understanding of the general procedures of the process and also understand the specific rules of the school your client goes to.

This program, presented by Scott Limmer, will discuss the school conduct process from investigation to appeal. The program will cover the role of the attorney and how to best help your clients, Title IX cases, and how those differ from the usual discipline case, and will provide a solid foundation to be able to represent students in need of help.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Review the attorney's role in the college and graduate school discipline process
  2. Identify what happens when a complaint is made against a student
  3. Discuss how to conduct a hearing
  4. Examine Title IX hearings
