Overview
In the high-stakes world of law, even the most seasoned attorneys can find themselves reacting in ways they later regret, whether it's sending an ill-advised email or making a heated courtroom comment. The pressures of litigation and the adversarial nature of the legal profession can often lead to lapses in civility. This CLE course, led by behavioral consultant and former Pennsylvania Disciplinary Board Chair Doug Leonard, equips lawyers with tools to enhance self-awareness and self-management, promoting professionalism and decorum in and out of the courtroom. Attendees will learn the underlying causes of reactive behavior and develop strategies to respond thoughtfully, preserving their reputations and advancing their legal careers.
Learning Objectives:
- Discover the behavioral dynamics that influence assertiveness, competitiveness, and individuality in legal practice
- Identify your intrinsic expectations in key areas of behavior and how they impact interactions with clients, colleagues, and opposing counsel
- Explore how unmet expectations can trigger impulsive behaviors that negatively affect legal proceedings and professional relationships
- Improve self-awareness to manage emotional triggers and maintain civility in high-pressure legal environments
- Review how perceptual filters affect your interpretation of others' behaviors in legal contexts, and how to navigate these challenges effectively
