Nance L. Schick is an employment lawyer and mediator based in New York City, where she has been in solo practice since 2003. Author of DIY Conflict Resolution: Seven Choices and Five Actions of the Masters, she also informally facilitates workplace dispute resolution worldwide—before parties end up in court. Her goal is to help employers and employees create employment as a mutually beneficial partnership, so everyone has a more peaceful and productive work experience. Among other things, she does this through mediation, values-based employee documents, and fair and impartial complaint investigations.
Prior to law school, Nance worked in Human Resources and operations management at UPS, where she developed an interest in employment law. Planning to go to law school in the off seasons, she spent a few years in the front offices of three minor league professional sports franchises and later as a minor league hockey agent. She continues to work with athletic trainers, mascots, and others in the sports and entertainment industries. The skills she gained negotiating contracts have helped her creatively resolve some of the most intractable conflicts in workplaces, from union shops to licensed professions and higher education.
Nance is certified in employment and ethno-religious mediation, and she served for two years as the Main Representative to the United Nations for the International Center for Ethno-Religious Mediation. She has also been certified in Title IX investigations and worked in the Office of Compliance and Diversity at Queens College, one of the most diverse colleges in the world.
Frequently, Nance assists journalists and podcasters with content on conflict resolution, mediation, workplace disputes, domestic employment, independent contractors, and poly victimization. She has been recognized by Super Lawyers (ADR, 2018-2023), New York Economic Development Corporation/B-Labs (Finalist, Best for NYC 2015 & 2016), US Chamber of Commerce (2015 Blue Ribbon Small Business), Enterprising Women Magazine (Honorable Mention, 2014 Woman of the Year awards), and Urban Rebound NY/Count Me In (Finalist, 2013 Pitch Competition).
Receiving her B.S. in Education (Sport Administration) from the University of Louisville, Nance went on to earn a J.D. from the State University of New York University at Buffalo with certificates in Government Law (Education, Tax).
Nance frequently teaches continuing education courses in-person and online for funeral directors.
Nance has taught Business Law to funeral services students and continuing education courses to AAMI graduates.
A survivor of abuse and multiple crimes, Nance often speaks to Victimology students at John Jay College about her repeat victimization.
