Claudia Rast is a shareholder in Butzel Long's Ann Arbor office, where she chairs the firm’s IP, Cybersecurity and Emerging Technology Group. Her areas of practice focus on domestic and international privacy and data protection, cross-border data transfers, the integrity of critical infrastructure, data breach response, cybersecurity standards, and technology licensing and protection. Rast’s privacy and data protection practice extends over 25 years, during which time she has counseled hundreds of clients on matters of cybersecurity impacting individuals both in the US and in foreign jurisdictions, including a “mega” breach response, defined by the Ponemon Group as one involving over 1 million affected individuals. In addition to her legal practice, she is a frequent author on issues of privacy and data security. Rast has been a longtime member of the American Bar Association’s Section of Environment, Energy, and Resources, and was Chair of that Section in 2008-2009. In August 2020, Rast received an ABA Presidential appointment to a three-year term to co-chair the ABA’s Cybersecurity Legal Task Force—a task force on which she has served both as a liaison member and member-at-large since 2013. As part of that Task Force, Rast co-authored chapters in the ABA’s Cybersecurity Handbook (2nd ed. 2018), and (3rd ed. 2022), and was a contributing author to the Vendor Cybersecurity Checklist, 2nd Edition, published in May 2021. Rast received her B.S. from the University of Michigan, majoring in Natural Resources, and her J.D. from University of Detroit School of Law, where she was the editor-in-chief of the law review and later clerked for the Chief Justice of the Michigan Supreme Court, G. Mennen “Soapy” Williams.
