Biography

Andrea Panjwani is the Chief Legal Officer at the Center for Safety and Change (“Center”). In addition to overseeing legal issues, compliance and protocols for the Center, Andrea oversees the legal program and manages the immigration legal practice. Prior to joining the Center, Andrea served as the managing attorney of the immigration practice at My Sisters’ Place, Westchester County’s domestic violence and human trafficking agency. Andrea is a former co-executive director of the Immigrant Defense Project, a non-profit dedicated to reversing the disproportionate and harmful adverse immigration consequences that result from criminal and family court proceedings. Andrea has also served as the directing attorney at African Services Committee, a non-profit organization which provides housing, case management, HIV-related medical advocacy and civil legal and immigration services; clinical instructor and adjunct professor at Brooklyn Law School and staff attorney at Legal Services of Greater Miami.  Andrea co-chairs the Rockland Immigration Coalition, sits on the New York State Advisory Council of Immigration Issues in Family Court, ICE Out of Courts Coalition, and facilitates the Justice for Families collaborative in Rockland County. Andrea is a regular trainer on topics including human trafficking, immigration relief for survivors of gender-based violence and human trafficking, cross-cultural interviewing, immigrant rights and the adverse immigration consequences of family court dispositions. Andrea is the recipient of the Equal Justice Award, Louis J. Lefkowitz Public Service Award, Above and Beyond Award and Commitment to Diversity in Legal Services and Pro Bono commendation.
