Overview

In this course, presented by Karen Sloat, we will explore the many types of existing, traditional leaves of absence, the latest trends across the nation to create new leaves, and the related laws that govern your clients. Attendees will learn about many types of leaves, how they overlap and confuse employers and employees alike, and how to spot the issues that lead to a legal obligation to provide (or deny) leave. Whether you represent employers, employees, businesses, contractors, or other clients, this course will inform you about critical legal issues that affect almost every employed person and what employer/company actions can trigger legal liability.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify many types of leaves of absence that require attorneys and clients to "spot the issue" and then "navigate exits on the leave laws highway" successfully

  2. Develop strategies for clients to make or handle leave requests, despite precarious fact situations

  3. Review and analyze the purpose of employment documents that are critical to your client's success

  4. Discuss the bigger issues: how do leave laws or company policies address changing social norms about work and employers' humanity in light of employees' physical and mental health needs?
