Kentucky CLE Requirements for Attorneys

Attorneys in Kentucky are considered Experienced after they have been admitted in Kentucky for more than twelve months and have completed the New Lawyer Program.

Experienced Kentucky Attorneys must complete 12 CLE credit hours per year, including at least 2 credits of ethics, professional responsibility, and professionalism. The remaining 10 credit hours may be in any other CLE credit category.

Experienced Kentucky Attorneys can fulfill their KY CLE Requirements by attending CLE classes that have been approved and accredited through the Kentucky Supreme Court. Some acceptable course formats are:

  • DVD
  • CD
• Live CLE Programs
  • Live Webinars 
    
  • In-person seminars
  • Teleseminars

Yes! Experienced Kentucky Attorneys can receive credit for other activities, such as:

• Teaching a CLE Program - Kentucky attorneys will receive 1 CLE credit for every 60 minutes of teaching an approved CLE program.
• Preparing Materials for a CLE Program - Attorneys may earn 1 credit for every 2 hours of preparation, up to 12 hours per year.
• Research or Legal Writing - Kentucky attorneys may earn credit for writing a publication that contributes to the legal competency of the attorney and is approved by the Kentucky CLE Commission. The attorney cannot receive credit for paid legal writing. Attorneys may earn 1 CLE credit for every 2 hours spent researching, writing, or editing material presented by another attorney at an approved CLE program, up to 6 credits per year.
• Public Speaking/Service - Limited to 2 credits per year - CLE credit may be awarded to attorneys for participating as a speaker in a law-related public speaking engagement to a school or civic group. This may include:
  • Speech
  • Panel Member
  • Mock Trial
  • Seminar leader
  • Note: An attorney seeking CLE credit for one of these activities must apply to the CLE Commission for approval, including written copies of their presentations, or a narrative summary of the information presented (where appropriate). In order to receive CLE credit for one of these types of activities, the attorney must not have been paid for the speaking engagement.
• Completing Law School Classes - Attorneys may receive CLE credit for attending law school classes, as long as the attorney registers for the course and completes all of the necessary requirements of it. The amount of CLE credit granted will be two times the number of semester or credit hours awarded by the law school for successful completion of the course.
  

The deadline for KY attorneys to complete their CLE credits is June 30th every year.

Yes, Experienced Attorneys may carry over 24 excess credits earned, including up to 4 ethics credits, into the next two reporting periods.
