Colorado CLE Requirements for Attorneys

Experienced attorneys in Colorado are those who have already completed their first compliance period after being admitted to the Colorado Bar.

Experienced Colorado attorneys must complete 45 CLE credit hours, including at least 7 Professional Responsibility credits, every three years. 

• At least 5 must be in Ethics or Professionalism
• At least 2 must be in Equity, Diversity, and Inclusivity

Experienced Colorado Attorneys can fulfill their CO CLE Requirements by attending CLE classes in a format that has been approved and accredited through the Colorado Supreme Court. Some approved formats are:

  • On Demand Video or Audio Courses
  • Other Digital Media

Yes! Experienced Colorado Attorneys can receive credit for:

• Speaking or teaching an accredited CLE program. Attorneys earn up to 4 CLE credits for every 50 minutes of teaching, including prep time.
• Publishing legal research-based writing. Provided that it is not done in the ordinary course of the practice of law, the performance of judicial duties, or other regular employment, Colorado attorneys can earn credit for legal research activities. The maximum 9 credits per reporting period.
• Participating in the Colorado Attorney Mentor Program (CAMP). Attorneys can participate as a mentor or mentee and earn credit based upon the length of the program.
  • Completing a 1 year CAMP program earns 9 CLE credits including 2 Ethics.
  • Completing a 6 month CAMP program earns 4 CLE credits including 1 Ethics.
  • Note: CAMP cannot be used to satisfy the EDI requirement.
    
• Providing pro bono legal services. Attorneys may earn 1 general CLE credit for every 5 billable-equivalent hours. Maximum 9 pro bono General Credits per reporting period via any combination of pro bono representation and mentoring.
• Independent Study  (Maximum 9 CLE credits, no Professional Responsibility allowed)
  • Attending or teaching a non-accredited course
  • Required training and preparation to be a judge or evaluator of a mock trial, moot court, or client counseling class.
  • Actively engaging as a legislator in the Colorado General Assembly.

Colorado attorneys must complete their CLE requirements by December 31st every three years.

The first compliance period begins on the date of admission or certification and ends on the 31st of December of the third full calendar year following the year of admission or certification to practice law in Colorado.

No, Experienced Attorneys cannot carry over credits into the next cycle.

Note: When self-applying for an On Demand course in CO, attorneys should use the Independent Study Form. CO attorneys can take a maximum of 9 credits of per reporting cycle in Independent Study courses and are limited to General credit only.

Experienced Colorado Attorneys who live in, practice in and are licensed in another jurisdiction with a mandatory CLE requirement may take advantage of Comity.

Comity allows a CO attorney to submit proof of their compliance of another jurisdiction's MCLE requirement every 3 year reporting period to the Colorado Office of Attorney Registration. This will fulfill their Colorado MCLE requirement.

Compliance groups are determined by the date of admission or certification to the bar of the State of Colorado. The first compliance period begins on the date of admission or certification and ends on the 31st of December of the third full calendar year following the year of admission or certification.

Compliance periods following the first compliance period, begin on the 1st of January immediately following the previous compliance period and end on the 31st of December of the third full calendar year thereafter.

[i.e. if you are admitted to Colorado on May 10, 2019, your first compliance period runs from May 10, 2019 to December 31, 2022. Your next compliance period would run from January 1, 2023 to December 31, 2025 (3 full calendar years)]
